The New Mexico line is the edge of the county. It is not the edge of the bookkeeping.
Bailey County is western Panhandle ground, and the books in Muleshoe are cotton, cattle, wheat, or a shop that serves them. A gin ticket that never got an account is a specific problem. It gets fixed from the file. You do not drive it anywhere.
Bailey County is on the western Panhandle, on the New Mexico line, and the seat is Muleshoe. It was established in 1876 from Bexar County. The name is Peter James Bailey III, a soldier and defender of the Alamo. The handbook describes the Southern High Plains here, playas that take the drainage, and the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos on the northern part of the county.
Settlement waited, the handbook says, because the XIT Ranch held most of the land from 1882 until that ranch was divided and sold in 1901. The first cattle reached the ranch country in 1885. After the sale, other ranches, including the Muleshoe, dominated, and then the land was sold as farm tracts. Many of the new farmers grew wheat, corn, and forage. Cotton became the leading crop by the end of the 1920s, and the county had a gin of its own by 1923.
For the early twenty-first century the handbook names feedlot cattle, dairy cattle, cotton, wheat, sorghum, corn, and vegetables as the chief agricultural products. It also names manufacture of mufflers and farm supplies, an electrical generating plant, and food processing. If your books are in Muleshoe, the file is a high-plains file. It is not a bay and it is not a pine mill.
On the July 2026 Comptroller figure used here, Bailey County has a county sales tax of 0.5%. That sits on the state sales tax of 6.25%. Any city rate stacks above both. The combined cap is 8.25%.
The rendition of business personal property is due April 15 at the county appraisal district for Bailey County. The franchise report is due May 15. Texas does not have a state income tax. The gin, the feedlot, and the shop still live with those two dates. A city rate, if Muleshoe or another city has one, is not printed here.
Muleshoe is the seat on the New Mexico line, southern High Plains, drained north by the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos and otherwise into playas. The XIT held most of the land from 1882 until the 1901 division and sale. Cattle reached that ranch country in 1885. Later names in the handbook include the Muleshoe ranch and the Bovina Cattle Company. Farmers then grew wheat, corn, and forage. Tag the ticket you trust least with one word: gin, feedlot, or shop. Parmer, Lamb, and Cochran are neighbors, not tags. The town and the old ranch share a name and are still not the same tag.
