Bastrop County was established in 1836 and the county file lists it among the original 23 counties. The seat is Bastrop. The name is Baron Felipe Enrique Neri de Bastrop, the Dutch settler who helped Stephen F. Austin obtain land grants. In 1837 the Congress of the Republic restored the name Bastrop after the municipality had been called Mina, for Francisco Xavier Mina. The town dropped Mina the same year.
Smithville and Elgin sit with the seat on the rail line. Routes 71, 95, 21, and 304 cross the ground. Uplands carry sandy loam, plus cedar, hickory, elm, and walnut. A northwestern corner and a southeastern border turn to prairie. The Colorado River bisects the county from northwest to southeast. Near that river the handbook names the Lost Pine Forest. The McCormick site near McDade holds Neo-American traces. Tonkawa people lived on this ground, and Comanche hunters came to the river each autumn. In 1804 Spanish governor Manuel Antonio Cordero y Bustamante placed a fort at the Colorado crossing where Bastrop now stands. Austin's Little Colony grant dates to 1827. Minerals listed are clay, lignite, oil, gas, sand, and gravel.
A pine settlement, a river-bottom farm ticket, and a mineral stub can share one Bastrop week. The Lost Pines are the place. They are not the close. Grassyville and the Bastrop Steam Mill Company show up later in that entry, along the old road between Nacogdoches and San Antonio. Lake Bastrop and Buescher State Park are parks the entry names.

The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Bastrop County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Bastrop County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
A load out of the Lost Pine Forest and a bottomland sale off the Colorado's alluvial ground can clear the same week you also receive clay, lignite, oil, or gas paper. Post oak uplands and the blackland strip with its waxy clay are different ground, so the work done on each can be different money. Mina was the municipality name before the Republic put Bastrop back. Cordero's fort in 1804 is a crossing, not a vendor you pay. McDade and the McCormick site are places in the entry. Leave those names off the chart of accounts. Stephen F. Austin's Little Colony explains why farms were opened on the southern part of the county. It does not label Thursday.
Smithville and Elgin are the rail towns that entry names with Bastrop, and Cedar Creek is the community it mentions when later confrontations flared. Red Rock is another place name in the same account. A pine load from the Lost Pine Forest can clear the same week as a Colorado-bottom sale and a lignite or clay stub. Coahuila and the Mina municipality explain the old government. The Nacogdoches road explains an old route. None of those titles Thursday in the books. The Bastrop Steam Mill Company is the lumber works that entry credits with an early industry here. Lake Bastrop and Buescher State Park are the parks that entry names beside the seat.
