Blanco County was established in 1858 from Burnet, Comal, Gillespie, and Hays counties. The seat is Johnson City. The name is the Blanco River. Blanco is Spanish for white. The handbook says the Marques de San Miguel de Aguayo gave the river that name in 1721.
The county sits on the eastern Edwards Plateau in the Hill Country. The ground is hilly, and some streambeds show a stairstep of limestone benches. About two-thirds, the north and center, drains to the Colorado through Miller Creek, Cypress Creek, and the Pedernales River. The southern third drains to the Guadalupe through the Blanco and the Little Blanco. A Father Santa Ana once proposed a mission on the Pedernales. Ancestors of the Lipan Apache were in this country when Spanish parties crossed it. Minerals named include limestone, lead, oil, gas, industrial sand, and dolomite. Johnson City lies west of Austin and northwest of San Antonio. That is distance, not a claim that the file belongs to either city. Llano and Kendall also touch the line.
A Pedernales-side ticket and a Blanco-side ticket are both this county. They are not one bucket. Jesse McCrocklin, Horace Eggleston, Noel Mixon, and James Hughes Callahan are names from before this county existed.

The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Blanco County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
