Borden County's seat is Gail, at the edge of the Llano Estacado. The county rate is higher than most of its neighbors. The books still have to say what the money was. Remote is the start.
The county file lists Borden County as established in 1876 from Bexar County. The Handbook of Texas says the county was marked off in 1876 from Bosque County. This page does not invent a resolution between those two parent lines. The seat is Gail. The name is Gail Borden, Jr., who lived from 1801 to 1874, a businessman, publisher, surveyor, and inventor of condensed milk, and an organizer of the Republic of Texas. The county was organized in 1891 with Gail as the seat.
The handbook puts the county at the edge of the Llano Estacado, bounded by Scurry, Howard, Dawson, Lynn, and Garza. The Caprock, Gail Mountain, and Muchakooga Peak are the landmarks it names. Water runs to the Colorado and to Lake J. B. Thomas. Soils are loams, sandy loams, and clay. Before settlement the ground was in the range of the Penateka band of Comanches, also called the Honey-Eaters. The entry says the early economy revolved around cattle and that cotton later became the most important crop. Ranchers out of Howard County pushed range onto this ground in 1876. Settlers had stayed away because the country was far from army posts and looked dry.
Condensed milk is why the man is remembered. It is not a claim about what you sell. A cattle check and a cotton check in Gail are still different papers. Mary Blankenship passed through in 1901. Wasps was another nickname for the Penateka band, and Shoshone is the older root that entry gives them.
Gail's 1% county sales tax is a rate fact. It is not the name of the deposit.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 1% for Borden County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Borden County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.

A royalty stub from that find is a third paper, and the year alone is not its caption.
