Bowie County sits on the Red River at the Arkansas line. The seat name differs between the county file and the handbook opening. The books do not. They can be closed remotely.
Bowie County was established in 1840 from Red River County. The county file names New Boston as the seat. The Handbook of Texas opening names Boston as the county seat, twenty-one miles west of Texarkana, and treats Texarkana as the main town. This page does not invent a resolution. It uses both sentences. The name is James Bowie, who lived from 1796 to 1836 and died at the Alamo.
The handbook puts the county in the far northeastern corner, on the East Texas timberlands, with the Red River on the north. Arkansas lies to the east, and both Arkansas and Oklahoma lie across the north. The Sulphur River is the southern line. Soils are mostly loam or clay. Minerals include oil, gas, lignite, and ceramic clay, and the entry describes abundant forest land. At European contact the Caddo held this ground. They later left after epidemics and trouble with the Osage. Shawnee, Delaware, and Kickapoo bands were here in the early 1820s and were gone by the mid-1830s. Jean Baptiste Benard de La Harpe founded Le Poste des Cadodaquious in 1719. In 1806 Thomas Freeman and Peter Custis came up the Red River and turned back at Spanish Bluff, almost due north of present New Boston.
A timber ticket, a clay or lignite stub, and a shop deposit in this corner of the state are three facts. The Red River is the border, not the label. Routes tied to Moscoso in 1542, Henri Joutel in 1687, and Henri de Tonti are exploration, not a count of boards.
Whether you say Boston or New Boston, the timber and the mineral stub are still different money.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Bowie County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Bowie County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Forest land is what the handbook says this county has, plus oil, gas, lignite, and ceramic clay. A board still in the yard is not a sale. A lignite stub or a ceramic-clay stub is not a board. James Bowie's death at the Alamo names the county. It is not a product code. Cadodaquious, La Harpe, Spanish Bluff, Freeman, and Custis are exploration on the Red River. Caddo, Osage, Shawnee, Delaware, and Kickapoo are the earlier map. Arkansas across the line is a neighbor. None of those names price a load of pine. The Sulphur River is the south line. Do not turn that river into a sulfur product unless the invoice says sulfur.
DeKalb, Hooks, Maud, and Redwater are town names in that entry along with Texarkana. Moscoso in 1542, Henri Joutel in 1687, and Henri de Tonti are exploration on the Red River, not a tally of boards. A board still in the yard is unsold. Ceramic clay and lignite are not boards. Set the yard count beside the settlement. When an old paper says Boston and the county file says New Boston, follow the name printed on the document in your hand and finish the count.
