Brazos County's seat is Bryan, with College Station the other community the handbook names. The books are a labeling job. They do not require a drive.
Brazos County was established in 1841 from Washington County. The county file says it was named Navasota County until 1842. The seat is Bryan. The name is the Brazos River, from the Spanish Los Brazos de Dios, the arms of God.
The handbook puts the county between the Navasota and Brazos rivers, with Robertson County to the northwest, Madison and Grimes to the east, Washington to the south, and Burleson to the southwest. Bryan is the seat and College Station is the other major community. U.S. 190 and state highways 6, 21, and 30 cross it, with the Union Pacific. The northern third is Blackland Prairie, with elm, oak, pecan, and mesquite along the streams. The rest is Post Oak Savannah, with post oak, walnut, and pecan. Paleo-Indian spearpoints and a butchered mammoth were found at the Duewall-Newberry Site on the Brazos. Spanish reports named Bidai and Tonkawa people here. The Old San Antonio Road passed the northwest boundary without a Spanish town. Early colonists along the river included Elliot McNeil Millican, Richard Carter, and Mordecai Boon. The first court, Judge R. E. B. Baylor presiding, sat in the home of Joseph Ferguson. The early seat was Boonville, on John Austin's league, surveyed by Hiram Hanover in 1841.
A Bryan shop ticket and a College Station deposit can share a week and still be different money. The old county name Navasota does not merge them, and neither does the river's Spanish name. Melvan Lanham and James H. Evetts sit on the colony list, and the Tenth Texas Infantry appears in the later military paragraph of that entry.
Bryan and College Station are both in this county. They are not one income line by default.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Brazos County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Brazos County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Duewall-Newberry is a mammoth and spearpoints, not a vendor. Boonville was the seat before Bryan. Judge R. E. B. Baylor, Joseph Ferguson, Hiram Hanover, and Mordecai Boon are 1841 names, as are Millican and Carter on the colony list. Do not turn those surnames into categories unless they are printed on your invoice. College Station is simply the other major community the handbook names beside Bryan. U.S. 190 and highway 6 move between them. Los Brazos de Dios is an etymology. Bidai and Tonkawa are the contact-era map. Blackland soils in the north and post oak savannah to the south do not tell you which community a credit belongs to. Washington County is only the parent from 1841. The first name of this county was Navasota. Robertson, Madison, Grimes, and Burleson only border you.
Millican and Wellborn are communities in that entry besides Bryan and College Station. Millican is the older rail stop the account describes before the seat moved. Melvan Lanham and James H. Evetts are colony surnames beside Mordecai Boon. The Tenth Texas Infantry is a military name in a later paragraph, not a location. Boonville, on John Austin's league, was the seat before Bryan. A credit belongs to Bryan, to College Station, or to neither of them. Germans, Austrians, Czechs, Bohemians, and Italians are settlement names in that account. The Bryan and College Station Interurban Railway is the line that entry says ran between those two communities.
