Brewster County was established in 1887 from Presidio County. The seat is Alpine. The name is Henry Percy Brewster, who lived from 1816 to 1884 and served as secretary of war for the Republic of Texas.
The handbook places the county in the Trans-Pecos and names Big Bend National Park as a site in the county. The Rio Grande is the southern boundary. Most of the county drains to the Rio Grande, and the northern part drains to the Pecos. Presidio County lies west, Jeff Davis County northwest, and Pecos County and Terrell County east. U.S. 90 and the Southern Pacific cross the north. U.S. 385 and state highway 118 run south toward the park. The South Orient Railroad crosses the northwest. The handbook names Emory Peak among the high ground. Lower slopes carry ocotillo, lechuguilla, sotol, tarbrush, and creosote bush. Higher slopes carry pinon and juniper, and the top of the range carries Douglas fir, aspen, Arizona cypress, and madrone. Minerals it lists include mercury, fluorspar, silver, and lead. It ties historical mercury work to the Terlingua Mining District in the south. Alpine itself sits in the northwest of the county.
A park-season deposit and an Alpine shop ticket are both this county. The country between them does not decide which money you have already earned. The Chisos Mountains, Kokernot Spring northeast of Alpine, the Colima warbler, and Hugo Oconor are in that entry.
Alpine can have a park week and a town week in the same set of books.
