Organized in 1892, sixteen years after the cut. Quitaque was the older stage stop.
Briscoe County's seat is Silverton, where the High Plains break at the Caprock. A canyon-floor credit and a caprock credit can land the same Friday. The close is remote.
Silverton sits above the break, where the Caprock splits the Llano Estacado from the rolling plains and Tule Canyon cuts the north. Cotton, wheat, and grain sorghum occupy the ground above the rim. Gray and chocolate loam, then light sand, line the valleys of the Prairie Dog Town Fork and Tule Creek. Mesquite and cedar stand in the breaks. Hall lies east, Swisher west, Armstrong north, and Floyd and Motley south.
Andrew Briscoe, a Revolution soldier who later judged cases and promoted railroads, is the namesake. The ground was cut from the Bexar District in 1876 and organized on March 15, 1892, after Thomas J. Braidfoot's townsite won over the stage stop at Quitaque.
Silverton can clear a canyon credit and a rim credit in one week.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows no county sales tax for Briscoe County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Briscoe County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
When the check says cotton, wheat, or sorghum, use that word on the deposit. Those three crops can leave the ground above the rim in one week and still need three captions. Paper that says Quitaque stays under Quitaque. Highway 86 can bring a Turkey ticket into the same Silverton week. The road does not merge the piles, and the missing county rate does not choose the crop.
