Brooks County's seat is Falfurrias, on brushy ground where Highway 285 meets the farm roads. A livestock settlement and a town paper can share a week. Remote is how the folder gets read.
The county file dates Brooks County to 1911 and names Starr County as the parent. It gives the personal name as James Abijah Brooks, a Texas Ranger and legislator. The handbook entry says John Abijah Brooks, the representative who worked with Edward C. Lasater to separate this ground from Starr. This page does not invent a resolution between those two forms of the name. Falfurrias is the seat, at U.S. Highway 281, State Highway 285, and farm roads 2191 and 1418.
Encino, Flowella, and Rachal are the other communities named. Duval and Jim Wells lie north, Kleberg and Kenedy east, Hidalgo and Starr south, Jim Hogg west. Cover is live oak, mesquite, brush, and cactus. Minerals listed are caliche, gypsum, salt domes, oil, and gas. Coahuiltecan speakers were the historical-era people. Deep sand and the lack of a major river left the ground unsettled long after the coast had towns. Early grants include San Salvador del Tule to Juan Jose Balli, El Encino en el Poso to Luciano Chapa, and El Paisano to Ramon de la Garza.
Falfurrias can hold a brush-country credit and a town credit together.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows no county sales tax for Brooks County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Brooks County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Edward C. Lasater set headquarters south of the present town and, after the San Antonio and Aransas Pass reached him in 1904, shifted a big ranch toward mixed farming. Manuel Guerra's Starr politics are why the separation fight happened. Jim Hogg County was cut from the west of this ground in 1913. Amado de la Garza was the first sheriff, E. R. Rachal the assessor, Rufino Garcia the clerk, and Lazaro Lopez the treasurer. Lasater later stocked Jersey cows. The entry names Falfurrias butter from that dairy turn, plus the Heritage Museum and the Texas Tropical Trail. Caliche, gypsum, and a salt-dome paper are three mineral slips if you actually hold them. A 1911 county does not inherit Starr's labels.
Juan Jose Balli received San Salvador del Tule in 1797. Luciano Chapa held El Encino en el Poso. Ramon de la Garza held El Paisano. Edward Lasater's Jersey herd supplied what the record calls Falfurrias butter. The Heritage Museum stands in the seat, and the Texas Tropical Trail passes through. Amado de la Garza, Rufino Garcia, Lazaro Lopez, and E. R. Rachal were the first officers. The Kenedy Pasture Company sold Lasater the starter herd. Jim Hogg County was cut from the west side in 1913.
