Caldwell County's seat is Lockhart. The Luling-Darst Creek fault splits the ground. A credit from one side is not automatically a credit from the other. The look is remote.
Matthew Caldwell, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, is the name the county file uses. Lockhart is the seat, on land from Byrd Lockhart's Plum Creek grant. The county was formed in 1848 from Bastrop County and Gonzales County. Lawmakers had been asked for a Plum Creek County and chose this name instead.
Bastrop, Fayette, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Hays, and Travis are the neighbors. U.S. Highway 183 and Farm Road 20 meet in Lockhart. The Luling-Darst Creek fault runs from southwest to northeast. Northwest of it the ground is blackland, tall grass and mesquite on black waxy soil. Southeast the ground is hillier and sandy, with oak and elm. Plum Creek drains most of the interior inside the Guadalupe basin. The San Marcos River is the fence with Guadalupe County. Clay, industrial sand, gravel, oil, and gas are the mineral names. Prairie Lea and the battle of Plum Creek belong to that early record.
Lockhart books can belong to two sides of one fault.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Caldwell County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.

The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Lockhart rests on Byrd Lockhart's Plum grant. The Luling-Darst fault runs from southwest to northeast. Above that fault the soil is black and waxy. Below it the ground is sandy, with elm. Plum drains the interior. The San Marcos is the fence with Guadalupe. Prairie Lea and the 1840 battle along Plum are history. Tinney's McMahan neighborhood is the exception on that side. Clear Fork Baptist is the first congregation. Fentress, Martindale, Lytton Springs, and Maxwell came after. Rail stops that followed were Dale and Reedville. Brownsboro, McNeil, Taylorsville, and Elm Grove were bypassed. Atlanta grew along those waters as Prairie Lea. Uhland is another settlement. Lawmakers were asked to call it Plum and chose Mathew Caldwell instead. The 1848 cut took land from Gonzales and from Bastrop. Bastrop only touches one edge. Hays and Travis and Fayette and Guadalupe only touch an edge. Lockhart is where the month is closed, on FM 20 and U.S. 183. Byrd Lockhart's grant is the land under Lockhart. Lockhart Springs was the site people asked for. Karankawa range sometimes reached Gonzales and this ground. Mathew Caldwell is the personal namesake and not a title on the filing.
