Matagorda Island is shell sand. Point Comfort and Seadrift are not the courthouse.
Calhoun County's seat is Port Lavaca, on the coastal prairie between Houston and Corpus Christi. The island, the bay, and the town can all throw money into one week. Remote is how the file is read.
John C. Calhoun, vice president of the United States and an advocate of Texas statehood, is the name. Port Lavaca is the seat now. Lavaca was the first seat, and Indianola held the courthouse for a long stretch after 1852. The county was formed in 1846 from Jackson County, Matagorda County, and Victoria County.
Victoria and Jackson lie north, Refugio west, Matagorda east. Matagorda Island and the Gulf close the south. The island is deep shell sand. Mainland soils include deep black earth and sandy clay, with tall grass and live oak inland. Green Lake is the natural lake. Point Comfort and Seadrift are the other incorporated towns the entry names. U.S. Highway 87 and state highways 35 and 185 cross the county, with the Union Pacific. A Clovis point is part of the archeological record, and shell middens sit at Mustang Lake on San Antonio Bay. The Guadalupe drains through with the local creeks.
Port Lavaca can have a town week and a bay week.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Calhoun County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Calhoun County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Port Lavaca, Point Comfort, and Seadrift can each produce a slip in one week, and an older file may still say Lavaca or Indianola. Indianola grew out of the tent camp Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels called Karlshafen. Linnville, burned in the 1840 raid, sat north of today's seat, and the people who escaped by boat started the bluff settlement that became Port Lavaca. La Salle's landing is marked near Powderhorn Lake. Green Lake is natural water, not a fourth town.Matagorda Island is shell sand. It is not Matagorda County. U.S. 87 and highways 35 and 185 move traffic. The Union Pacific moves freight. Placido Benavides is a Revolution name in the land record, not a current buyer.
Port Lavaca holds QuickBooks Online. Lines travel on a secure link. Use Teams for 30 minutes to separate a finished shop slip from any date that has not happened yet. The bank feed should leave unfinished money unfinished. A short written note shows the split. e-signature signs. The booking link is the calendar. You do not boat the folder to Indianola's old site.
