North water to the Brazos, south water to the Colorado. Clyde is the other town, not a second ledger.
Callahan County's seat is Baird, on the Rolling Plains east of Abilene. No county sales tax is on this file. A credit from Clyde and a credit from Baird can still be different money. The close is remote.
James Hughes Callahan, a Revolution soldier who survived the Goliad Massacre and later led the Callahan expedition, is the name. Baird is the seat. The county was formed in 1858 from Bexar County, Bosque County, and Travis County. Organization waited until 1877. Callahan City held the seat for one short election, then Belle Plain, before the railroad town of Baird took it.
Shackelford and Jones lie north, Eastland east, Coleman and Brown south, Taylor west. Interstate 20, U.S. Highways 80 and 283, state highways 6, 36, 206, 279, and 351, and the Missouri Pacific cross the prairie. The Callahan Divide runs east to west. North of that low range, water runs toward the Brazos. South of it, water runs toward the Colorado. The east quarter is Cross Timbers: mesquite grass, red grama, tumble grass, Texas grama, post oak, and pecan. Clyde is the other town, still inside this county rather than Taylor County. James Dulan's shelter on Hubbard Creek and the Hart cabin on the South Prong of Pecan Bayou are early settlement marks. The Western Trail passed near Belle Plain.
Baird and Clyde are both here. They are not one income line by default.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows no county sales tax for Callahan County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Callahan County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Baird is the courthouse town. Clyde is the other town, east of Abilene and still on this side of the Taylor County line. A slip from Clyde and a slip from Baird can share a Tuesday. The Callahan Divide is the low range that sends north water toward the Brazos and south water toward the Colorado, so a basin word may also belong on the slip. Belle Plain and the brief seat at Callahan City are earlier towns on the Western Trail, near the Bar-be-cue Ranch. James Dulan on Hubbard Creek, the Hart cabin on the South Prong of Pecan Bayou, and John Hittson's Three Circle headquarters are settlement marks, not vendors. Red grama, Texas grama, and tumble grass are east-side grasses. Post oak and pecan there are Cross Timbers trees. William J. Maltby's ranger company and Nelson A. Smith's town-founding are the 1870s layer. Interstate 20 does not decide the basin.
Jasper McCoy ranched on the bayou. Dr. J. D. Windham's sons ranched in the southwest. The Whitten family camped on Deep Creek. The Eubankses used both this county and Shackelford. Belle Plain expected the Texas and Pacific and then lost out to Baird. Dodge City was the trail's far end. Caroline Hart built on the South Prong with A. A. Hart.
Later post offices in the entry include Oplin, Tecumseh, Dressy, Admiral, and Dudley. Professor W. J. Westmoreland had a school at Belle Plain. Henry C. Connelly described the ground on the Chihuahua expedition.
