Childress County's seat is Childress. The Comptroller figure used here includes a county sales tax. The fork of the Red River splits ranch ground from farm ground, and your file may be split the same way. The close is remote.
Three ranch brands organize the old range around the town of Childress, and a current bill should use a brand only when it shows one. A. Forsythe and Doss D. Swearingen started the OX Ranch in the south in 1879. Gustavus Franklin Swift is the name tied to the Shoe Nail Ranch on the north side, started in 1883. The Mill Iron is the third brand in that account. George Campbell Childress, an author of the Texas Declaration of Independence, is the namesake. The county file dates the county to 1876 and the parent tract to Bexar.
Baylor Lake and Lake Childress sit northwest of the seat. Oklahoma is the east line. Cottle is south. Hall is west. Collingsworth only touches the north. U.S. Highway 287 and the Fort Worth and Denver reach the seat. The Declaration explains the county name. It does not head the books.
Childress can have a ranch draw and a farm draw in one set of books.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Childress County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Childress County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Use OX, Shoe Nail, or Mill Iron only when the bill shows that brand. The OX is the south range, the Shoe Nail sat on the north side, and the Mill Iron is the third. A deposit that names none of them should not inherit one. The two lakes northwest of town are not interchangeable on a check. Put down the lake the paper names.
