Henry Clay, the Kentucky statesman, is the name. Henrietta is the seat. The county was marked off from Cooke County in 1857. After a reorganization in 1873, Cambridge held the seat for a time. Henrietta is the seat now.
The Red River is the north edge. The Wichita crosses the center and splits into two forks before it reaches the Red. Turkey, Dry Fork, Hay, and East Post Oak are the other streams named. Lake Arrowhead is the long western water. Mesquite, blackjack, post oak, and elm are the trees, thicker along the streams. U.S. Highways 287 and 82 cross. The ninety-eighth meridian runs through the eastern part. Wess Waybourne built on the south fork. Oil was found near Petrolia in 1901.

The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows no county sales tax for Clay County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.

The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Wichita and Taovaya people came into this valley from the northern plains. Diego Ortiz Parrilla crossed in 1759 on the way toward the Taovaya towns.
