Cochran County's seat is Morton, on grassy plains with sand hills. No county sales tax is on the file. The XIT once held much of this ground. That sentence does not label a current deposit. The close is remote.
Robert E. Cochran, who died at the Alamo, is the name. Morton is the seat. The county file says the county was formed in 1876 from Bexar County. The handbook says the legislature used land previously assigned to Bexar and Young counties. This page does not invent a resolution between those two parent lines.
New Mexico lies west, Bailey north, Hockley east, and Yoakum south. State highways 214, 114, and 125 cross level prairie and sand hills. Silver Lake, known to Spanish explorers as Laguna Quemado, is one of the small lakes. In the 1700s the Quahadi, also called the Antelope band, took this ground. In 1880 George W. Arrington's ranger detachment stopped at Silver Lake between Yellow House Canyon and New Mexico, looking for the so-called Lost Lakes. The XIT later controlled much of the grass.
Kiowa bands hunted this grass before the Quahadi took it. Grama and mesquite are the cover on the sand hills.
Morton can still be looking at a ranch credit and a farm credit from the same sand-hill week.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows no county sales tax for Cochran County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Cochran County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Morton's file can be a grass credit or a sand-hill farm credit, and Silver Lake does not name either one. Silver Lake is the salt lake Arrington's rangers used as a stop in 1880, called Laguna Quemado in the Spanish record, on the ride from Yellow House Canyon toward New Mexico while they looked for the Lost Lakes. The Quahadi, or Antelope, band is the Comanche name for the people who held the buffalo ground. Robert E. Cochran's death at the Alamo is the personal name. Highways 114 and 125 run east and west. Highway 214 runs north and south. Hockley County and Yoakum County are borders. Bailey County is the north line. Young County appears only in the handbook's parent sentence. The XIT held much of this grass later. If your check is not an XIT settlement, leave those initials off it.
