McKinney sits on Blackland Prairie, and the month can still mix a prairie credit with a creek-bottom credit. Collin McKinney, an author of the Texas Declaration of Independence, is the namesake. The county was created in 1846 from Fannin County. Most of the ground is level to gently rolling. Deep clayey soils over marl and chalk cover the center and west. Dark loamy soils lie to the east.
One Trinity fork, the East Fork, drains the west and center, while the Elm Fork drains the east. Farmersville sits east of the seat.
