Wellington is the seat, on rolling prairie east of the High Plains. The county file dates the county to 1876 and names Bexar as one parent tract. The Salt Fork of the Red crosses the middle. The Rowe brothers put the Diamond Tail Ranch in the southeast. In 1883 an English syndicate stocked the Rocking Chair Ranch on alternate sections across much of the rest.
