James Coryell, a frontiersman and Texas Ranger killed in a fight with Native people, is the name. Gatesville is the seat. The county was formed in 1854 from Bell County.
Hamilton, Bosque, McLennan, Bell, and Lampasas are the neighbors. The ground is plateau and grassland in the Grand Prairie. The Leon River drains the north and east. Cowhouse Creek drains the west and south. Soils are mostly alkaline, with limestone under them. Red cedar, live oak, and Spanish oak are among the trees. Copperas Cove was a camping ground for trail drivers. Other early communities include Evant, Bee House, the Grove, Oglesby, Lime City, and Leon Junction. The handbook notes that Fort Hood, now called Fort Cavazos, was established here in 1950.
Bee House, the Grove, Oglesby, and Lime City sit beyond Gatesville. Leon Junction is a place name, not the Leon River itself. Fort Hood and Fort Cavazos are the two names of the 1950 post.
Gatesville can hold a Leon paper and a Cowhouse paper.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Coryell County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
