Dalhart is the seat of Dallam County, on the XIT range.

Texline sits on the New Mexico line. Perico and Kerrick are other stops.

Dallam County's seat is Dalhart. A ranch credit and a rail credit can share a week. The close is remote.

Dallam County, in its own words

Dalhart closes the month on ground the Capitol Syndicate's XIT Ranch once held. Buffalo Springs was the first XIT headquarters, in the north. Perico began as a shipping point for that ranch. Texline sits at U.S. Highway 87 and the New Mexico border. Kerrick was laid out in 1931 on the North Plains and Santa Fe, which ran toward Stratford and Boise City, Oklahoma. James Wilmer Dallam, a lawyer and newspaper publisher, is the namesake. The county was marked off in 1876 from Bexar County.

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific crossed in 1900 and 1901 between Enid, Oklahoma, and Tucumcari, New Mexico. Hartley County is the south line.

Running a business here

Dalhart can clear an XIT credit and a rail credit.

The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows no county sales tax for Dallam County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.

Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Dallam County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.

The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.

Working with Steven from Dallam County

You share the QuickBooks Online file. Bank feeds come with that access. Documents go through a secure link. The first conversation is a 30-minute Teams call. Each month you get a short written note. Returns go out for e-signature. A time to start is on the Bookings page. You do not drive in, mail a box, or wait at an office. Send the file. The first pass names what is off. You get that note back while there is still time to use it.

Keep the XIT ranch credit apart from the rail credit, even when both arrive at Dalhart the same week. Buffalo Springs, Texline, Perico, and Kerrick are four labels. Use only the one the invoice prints. The North Plains and Santa Fe is the 1931 road through Kerrick. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific is the earlier crossing. Use a railroad name only when the freight bill prints it. Stratford, Boise City, Enid, and Tucumcari sit outside this folder.
