The Lazy S, the TJF, the Fish, and the Bartow. Dr. John Cameron's 1827 grant was not settled.
Dawson County's seat is Lamesa. A draw credit and a ranch credit can share a month. The close is remote.
Four outfits held most of the Dawson County range in the mid-1880s: the Lazy S of C. C. Slaughter, the TJF, the Fish, and the Bartow. Lamesa is the seat now. The first post office sat north of town at the Bartow ranch. Nicholas Mosby Dawson, a soldier of the Texas Revolution, is the namesake. The county was formed in 1876 from Bexar County. Sulphur Springs Draw crosses the ground and was the old trail onto the South Plains.
Methodists built the first church building in Lamesa in 1907. A Mexican grant to Dr. John Cameron is dated May 21, 1827, and the entry says there is no record that the contract was carried out. Do not invent a colony from that date.
Lamesa can see a draw credit and a ranch credit.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Dawson County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Dawson County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
A Lamesa deposit gets one outfit name only when the paper already shows it. Lazy S, TJF, Fish, and Bartow are four different checks. An old Bartow postmark, from the post office north of town, is not a present city deposit. When the work happened on the old trail onto the plains, say the draw, and do not turn that draw into a second town beside Lamesa. The 1907 church building stays in the history.
