Hereford is the seat of Deaf Smith County, on Tierra Blanca Creek.

Named for the scout Erastus Deaf Smith. The XIT held the western half.

Deaf Smith County's seat is Hereford. A creek credit and a ranch credit can share a month. The close is remote.

Deaf Smith County, in its own words

Hereford grew with the railroad and became the seat. Tierra Blanca Creek crosses the south of Deaf Smith County. Palo Duro Creek and North Palo Duro Creek cross the north. Beginning in 1882 the western half lay inside the XIT Ranch of the Capitol Syndicate. One division headquarters stood at Las Escarbadas. Erastus Deaf Smith, a scout in the Texas Revolution, is the namesake. The county was formed in 1876 from Bexar County.

La Plata, Farwell, and Glenrio are other places the entry names. Parmer and Castro lie south. Randall lies along another side. New Mexico lies west.

The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Deaf Smith County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.

Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Deaf Smith County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.

The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.

You share the QuickBooks Online file. Bank feeds come with that access. Documents go through a secure link. The first conversation is a 30-minute Teams call. Each month you get a short written note. Returns go out for e-signature. A time to start is on the Bookings page. You do not drive in, mail a box, or wait at an office. Send the file. The first pass names what is off. You get that note back while there is still time to use it.

When the paper names a creek, put that creek on the line and leave the other two off. Ranch money from the western half, the XIT half, is a different deposit from creek money. A headquarters name belongs on a bill only when the invoice prints it. La Plata, Farwell, and Glenrio each stay off a deposit that does not name them. The 1882 date belongs to the ranch story, not to a caption by itself.
