Three creeks do three different jobs around Denton. Hickory Creek drains into Lewisville Lake. Clear Creek drains into the Elm Fork. Denton Creek, in the south, feeds toward Grapevine. Lewisville Lake is the reservoir on the east side, joining what had been Lake Dallas with Garza-Little Elm Reservoir. John Bunyan Denton, a preacher, lawyer, and soldier, is the namesake. The county was created in 1846 from Fannin County.
