Spur is not the seat. Soldiers Mound stood near Spur.
Dickens County's seat is Dickens. A caprock credit and a creek credit can share a month. The close is remote.
Dickens the town is the courthouse. The town of Spur is not that courthouse, and the Spur Ranch is the livestock outfit near Spur. J. A. Dickens, who died at the Battle of the Alamo, is the namesake. The county was formed in 1876 from Bexar County. The flat northwest sits above the Caprock on the Llano Estacado. The rest is broken ground with sandy, chocolate, and red soils.
Croton Creek and Duck Creek drain the broken ground. Soldiers Mound, also called Anderson's Fort, was an army supply camp near the site of Spur. Motley lies north, Crosby west, Kent south, and King east.Do not treat a Spur outfit slip as a Dickens courthouse slip.
Dickens can see a Spur credit and a Croton credit.
The July 2026 Comptroller figure used here shows a county sales tax of 0.5% for Dickens County. State sales tax is 6.25%. Where a city has its own rate, that city rate stacks on the state rate and any county rate. The combined cap is 8.25%. City rates are not listed on this page.
Business personal property renditions go to the county appraisal district for Dickens County. Put April 15 on the calendar. That district's form says which date controls the list.
The franchise report is due May 15. Texas has no state income tax. Neither date goes away because of that.
Keep the Spur outfit slip out of the courthouse pile. When the paper says Spur, it means the town by the ranch or the outfit, and you still close the month at Dickens. That supply camp has two names in the handbook, so one camp does not need two lines. If the paper names Croton Creek or Duck Creek, use that creek in a full sentence on the deposit rather than a one-word label. The flat ground above the Caprock is a different week from the broken ground below it.
