The Arroyo Colorado was the idea. The crops were vegetables and cotton.
The Handbook of Texas puts Harlingen at U.S. 77 and U.S. 83 on the north bank of the Arroyo Colorado. Lon C. Hill founded it and named it for a Dutch city. Vegetables and cotton came first. An army airfield later became an air force base and closed. Combined sales tax is 8.25 percent.
Harlingen is in Cameron County. The census counted 71,829 people. Combined sales tax on the Comptroller city file is 8.25%. City tax is 2%. No transit authority is listed. No special-purpose district is listed. State tax 6.25% plus the named local pieces equals the combined 8.25%. County sales tax on the county file, not added on top of the combined city rate: Cameron none. Business personal property rendition is due April 15 to the appraisal district for the county of the property (Cameron County). Franchise (margin) tax report is due May 15. A no-tax-due threshold exists. Its dollar amount is not printed here. Texas has no personal income tax. The permit sets monthly, quarterly, or yearly sales-tax filing. Lon C. Hill pictured the Arroyo Colorado as a commercial waterway and founded the town on the north bank, naming it for a city in Holland. The post office and the first school, near the Hill residence, came with that founding. U.S. Highway 77 and U.S. Highway 83 cross in northwestern Cameron County. Early crops were vegetables and cotton. Harlingen Army Air Field came before Harlingen Air Force Base, which later closed. Distribution and shipping grew up at the highway crossing.
A vegetable shed and a cotton gin are different crops even in the same county. A waterway dream for the Arroyo Colorado is not a freight bill you owe today. The Dutch namesake is a label, not a European company. Hill is the founder, not a payer on a modern deposit. The airfield and the later air force base are the same ground under two era names. A vendor slip for that ground, only if you actually bill it now, is not a crate of vegetables.
Cameron is the county. Brownsville, elsewhere in Cameron, has another municipal piece. If the face says Brownsville, it leaves. The row is a 2 percent city tax and the state, combined 8.25 percent, no transit authority. Highway 77 running north does not import a bus tax. Say vegetables, cotton, or the old field. The arroyo explains why Hill picked the bank. Your week still needs the crop or the field written on the face.
