The Handbook of Texas says the international bridge turned McAllen into a winter resort and a port of entry to Mexico. It names citrus on the early fields, and it names gatherings: the Candlelight Posada, the Texas Citrus Fiesta, Borderfest, the Square Dance Jamboree.
McAllen is in Hidalgo County. The census counted 142,210 people. Combined sales tax on the Comptroller city file is 8.25%. City tax is 2%. No transit authority is listed. No special-purpose district is listed. State tax 6.25% plus the named local pieces equals the combined 8.25%. County sales tax on the county file, not added on top of the combined city rate: Hidalgo none. Business personal property rendition is due April 15 to the appraisal district for the county of the property (Hidalgo County). Franchise (margin) tax report is due May 15. A no-tax-due threshold exists. Its dollar amount is not printed here. Texas has no personal income tax. The permit sets monthly, quarterly, or yearly sales-tax filing. Santa Anita Ranch sat under what became this town, sheep and goats and horses before citrus. A folio for fruit you grew is not a folio for livestock you only boarded. Porciones on the old grants are a land story. They are not a second cash drawer. Do not code a booth fee to a grant name. Highway 83 runs east toward Weslaco and Harlingen. A saved place that says either of those towns leaves this pile, even if the driver started here. The bridge in the city account is the McAllen-Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge. Reynosa printed on a folio means the far side. Far side is not this counter. Winter visitors show up because that bridge made a resort, the account says. A visitor who paid you here is this counter. A visitor who paid on the far side is not. Borderfest is one gathering. The Texas Citrus Fiesta is another. The Candlelight Posada is another. The square-dance jamboree is another. Four packets, if you even have four. Most weeks you have one. A booth fee you kept can be yours. Goods a neighbor sold from a corner they rented are theirs. Write kept dollars only. Citrus, grapes, figs, alfalfa, broom corn: the east-side crops named in the account. Use the crop you actually sold. Do not paint every packet as citrus because the fiesta has that word in it. Hidalgo is the county under the store. Fixtures at the store belong on that county's roll later. The tent does not erase the roll, and the roll is not this packet. No bus belongs on a line here. If a keypad added one because the buyer lives in a bus city, strike the bus. The city piece is flat. A poster with your name on the bridge is advertising. It is not proof the sale happened on this bank. Place of payment wins. Ordinary fruit weeks are the folio. Festival weeks are the packet. Mixing them makes a booth look like a year of orchards, or an orchard look like a weekend. If the weekend also sold a meal, the meal is not the fruit unless you cooked it and kept the money.
