The city history makes Tyler the Smith County seat, named for the president who backed Texas statehood, on rich soil that drew planters. It says farmers later turned to roses. It also names the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler and other hospitals. A crate of roses and a clinic remittance are different money.
Tyler is in Smith County. The census counted 105,995 people. Combined sales tax on the Comptroller city file is 8.25%. City tax is 1.5%. No transit authority is listed. No special-purpose district is listed. State tax 6.25% plus the named local pieces equals 7.75%. Combined is 8.25%. The 0.5% gap is unnamed in those columns. Do not invent a district. County sales tax on the county file, not added on top of the combined city rate: Smith 0.5%. Business personal property rendition is due April 15 to the appraisal district for the county of the property (Smith County). Franchise (margin) tax report is due May 15. Commissioners named the seat for President John Tyler and bought the site from Edgar Pollett, laid out in blocks around a square, with a log courthouse that also served as a meeting hall. Planters came for the soil. Peaches dominated the fruit trees until a peach blight wiped out much of that crop, and farmers turned to roses. The East Texas Chest Hospital is the place now called the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler. Mother Frances is another hospital in that list, beside a plow factory, planing mills, and gristmills.
A rose shipment, a peach memory, and a hospital vendor are different slips. Roses are the crop that replaced the blighted fruit. A bud you sold is merchandise. A chest-hospital supply is a vendor bill to that campus, not a crate of roses. Mother Frances is its own door. The plow factory is a vendor from the older town, not a patient.
Smith is the seat under the shed. U.S. 69 and U.S. 271 and the state roads explain the junction. They do not merge a rose crate with a hospital purchase. No transit authority belongs on a line just because a buyer drove in from Dallas.
