Galveston is in Galveston County. The census counted 53,695 people. Combined sales tax on the Comptroller city file is 8.25%. City tax is 2%. No transit authority is listed. No special-purpose district is listed. State tax 6.25% plus the named local pieces equals the combined 8.25%. County sales tax on the county file, not added on top of the combined city rate: Galveston none. Business personal property rendition is due April 15 to the appraisal district for the county of the property (Galveston County). Franchise (margin) tax report is due May 15. A no-tax-due threshold exists. Its dollar amount is not printed here. Texas has no personal income tax. The permit sets monthly, quarterly, or yearly sales-tax filing. The city stands on the eastern end of Galveston Island, a sand barrier in the Gulf, where the currents of Galveston Bay keep a natural harbor. Interstate 45 ends here. José de Evia charted the coast and named the bay for Bernardo de Gálvez. Mapmakers later put Galveston on the island. Karankawa people hunted and fished it. It is the probable shipwreck landing of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. Louis Aury set a naval base in the harbor to support the Mexican revolution, with Francisco Xavier Mina and Henry Perry launching from the same point. The harbor sat between the New Orleans trade and Veracruz on the old sailing map.
Aury, Mina, and Perry are revolution names, not vendors. Cabeza de Vaca is a castaway in the account, not a customer. Karankawa is the earlier use of the island, not a brand. Gálvez is the viceroy the bay honors. A dock receipt on the harbor is not a beach rental and not a Houston ship-channel bill. Houston is fifty miles inland in the telling and has its own row, including Houston MTA, which this island row does not carry. City tax here is 2 percent and the combined column is 8.25 percent.
Galveston County is the roof under the island buildings. Texas City, on the mainland bay shore, has another municipal piece. A face that says Texas City leaves. The barrier island, the harbor, and the bay are the geography. Write harbor, beach, or island shop. The naval base of Aury is history unless the paper in your hand is actually about that ground today, which it almost never is.
